Pamplona-Iruña: visit to SEI quarters

Erasmus+ project students visited the quarters of SEI in Iruña on the 15th December 2017. The object of the visit was to get to know the work of SEI, an organization which works to integrate migrant youngsters in their new life in Navarre. Their purpose is to help these young people to adapt to their new situation, school, culture, etc.

The social workers of SEI explained our students how hard it is for young people to get used to their new life in Navarre after having lived the reality of the country of origin. They told us that the young migrants (in many cases just kids) have to pass the so-called ”duelo migratorio” in Spanish (migratory duel), a very vulnerable stage in their livers.

Our students learn that we shouldn’t connect migration and poverty as there are many reasons to migrate such as insecurity, war, lack of respect for human rights, and so on.

What SEI does is a work of being with 12-17 year olds to help their integrating in the welcoming society and tie them to their families. As the social workers told us, these migrant youngsters come to Navarre after having spent a long time living with a relative in their homeland. When they reunite with their parents o mother or father here, it is hard for them to get used to living with them because in many cases they were left when they were infants. Besides, their relationship has been by Skype or telephone and they don’t really know each other.
